Anita started learning Bharatanatyam at the age of four from her mother, Mrs. Janaki Sivaraman, Director of Nrithyashala School of Indian Dance in Baltimore, Maryland. Anita completed her Arangetram at the tender age of 7, under the guidance of her grand-guru Padmabushan Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, guru of her mother Mrs. Janaki Sivaraman. It was only her first step in her lifelong journey to follow her love for dance.
Anita’s eagerness to explore other classical Indian dance styles led her to Kuchipudi Art Academy, Chennai, India, where she trained under Padmabushan Guru Sri Vempati Chinna Satyam and later Guru Sri Vempati Ravi Shankar in the style of Kuchipudi. Exposure to the technical and theatrical aspects of Odissi, Kathak, and Mohiniattam, through workshops with highly regarded gurus, adds depth to Anita’s performances. Anita has worked with several leading dancers in all styles, throughout the USA, Canada, and India, powerfully leading dance productions, skillfully choreographing group works, and innovatively fusing eastern and western cultures. A young and talented dancer as well as teacher, choreographer, and nattuvanar, Anita not only captures the hearts and minds of her audience but also leaves a lasting image of the nrityam she so skillfully executes.
